Por Thozhil Movie Review: A Taut Thriller with Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan Impressing in Engaging Moments

Story:

"Por Thozhil" follows two Chennai-based cops, a seasoned veteran, and a novice, as they embark on a mission to track down a serial killer in Trichy. Their investigation uncovers shocking revelations, but they soon realize that the evidence they've gathered is insufficient. Furthermore, the suspect they've been pursuing turns out to be a false lead. How will they crack this sensational case?

Review:

Directed by Vignesh Raja, "Por Thozhil" initially presents itself as a crime drama, akin to other whodunit films of recent times. The Trichy police force is shaken by the brutal murder of a woman, prompting sleepless nights as more similar crimes are reported. To handle the case, the department brings in Lokanathan (Sarath Kumar) and Prakash (Ashok Selvan) from Chennai. Lokanathan is a short-tempered veteran, while Prakash is an emotionally fragile rookie. Although their initial chemistry is lacking, they soon discover each other's strengths during their journey.

After setting the predictable yet intriguing premise, the story introduces a captivating character when the duo realizes the connection between the recent murders and cases reported decades ago. The investigation progresses as they trace the actions of their prime suspect, believing that it's only a matter of time before they apprehend him. However, their hopes are dashed when they discover that they have been pursuing the wrong person. Armed with just one clue, can they track down the real killer?

The film boasts a tightly-woven screenplay that delivers several edge-of-the-seat moments. While some tropes may be predictable, the overall investigation lacks a fresh perspective. Nonetheless, the filmmakers avoid unnecessary scenes that divert from the main plot. Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan deliver earnest performances, with the latter's character receiving more depth, while details about the former's past or behavior remain undisclosed. Nikhila Vimal's character, also a police officer, appears intermittently for reasons known only to the makers.

Maintaining viewers' engagement from the interval to the end is no easy feat, but Vignesh succeeds in achieving it, albeit leaving a few unanswered questions. The flashback portion is effectively conveyed, though reminiscent of a crucial sequence from another whodunit film, "Forensic." Impeccable performances from Harish Kumar and Santosh Keezhatoor elevate these scenes.

The technical aspects of the movie are well-handled, with notable editing by Sreejith Sarang. However, the much-anticipated climax could have been executed better to heighten the tension. The staging and execution could have incorporated more novelty to leave viewers enthralled. The concluding portion involving a family touches upon a relevant topic but feels somewhat unnecessary in the overall narrative.

Verdict:

"Por Thozhil" is a taut thriller that, despite a few minor flaws, manages to captivate audiences. The gripping screenplay compensates for some conveniently created sequences that propel the story forward. If you can overlook these glitches, prepare for an engaging cinematic experience.
